In 2014, as the only representative county in Jiangsu Province, Donghai participated in the Sino-US cooperation at the state-province level and became a liaising unit for the state-provincial cooperation mechanism between China and the United States. The Longhai Railway runs through the whole territory, from East China all the way to Central and West China. Construction of the Lianyungang-Xuzhou high-speed railway has already been started. Lianyungang-Huoerguosi high-speed railway(from the Yellow Sea to Xinjiang Autonomous Region) and Beijing-Shanghai high-speed railway also run through the county. Donghai is at a distance of 60 km from Lianyungang Port.
