AmCham Shanghai and the USA Pavilion
The USA Pavilion at Expo 2010 is an important demonstration of America’s commitment to the U.S.-China relationship and an historic opportunity to celebrate the longstanding friendship between our peoples. Expo 2010 is also an occasion to showcase American business, culture and values.
The U.S. Department of State is prohibited by Federal Law from spending appropriated funds to participate in expositions such as Shanghai 2010 World Expo. Therefore, U.S. private sector participation is essential to raise the necessary funds to design, build and operate the USA Pavilion.
Since the beginning of the State Department’s tender process, AmCham Shanghai has been active in promoting interest, participation and sponsorship of the USA Pavilion by connecting members who wish to contribute with organizers.
Together with the Bureau of Shanghai World Expo Coordination and USA Pavilion organizers, AmCham Shanghai has held a series of events for the American business community in Shanghai to learn about Expo 2010 opportunities. Soon after the official USA Pavilion team was selected by the State Department in April 2008, AmCham Shanghai hosted its first event for the team to present their plans to potential sponsors.
We look forward to the opening of the USA Pavilion on May 1, 2010 and AmCham Shanghai will continue to work with the USA Pavilion organizing team, AmCham Shanghai members, U.S. government officials to make the USA Pavilion a reality.

AmCham Shanghai President Brenda Foster’s letter to U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton
April 16th, 2009
The Honorable Hillary Rodham Clinton
Secretary of State
U.S. Department of State
2201 C Street, NW, Room 7226
Washington, DC 20520
Dear Madame Secretary:
On behalf of the American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai (AmCham Shanghai), I would like to express my appreciation for your continued efforts to ensure U.S. representation at the Shanghai World Expo 2010.
Since the beginning of the State Department's tender process, AmCham Shanghai has been active in promoting participation in Expo 2010 and support of the USA Pavilion. The USA Pavilion will highlight America's commitment to the U.S.-China relationship and is therefore extremely important to the U.S. business community in Shanghai.
Together with the Bureau of Shanghai World Expo Coordination and USA Pavilion organizers, AmCham Shanghai has held a series of events for the American business community in Shanghai to learn about Expo 2010 opportunities. Early on in the process, AmCham Shanghai began promoting the importance of the Expo by hosting Zhou Hanmin, deputy director general of Expo 2010, for a keynote speech at AmCham Shanghai's China Trends Conference in June 2007.
As you indicated in your letter of March 30th, 2009 active private sector participation is essential to design, build and operate the USA Pavilion. We couldn’t agree with you more. Soon after the official USA Pavilion team of Ms. Ellen Eliasoph and Mr. Nick Winslow was selected by the State Department in April 2008, AmCham Shanghai hosted its first event for the team to present their plans to potential sponsors. We have since hosted several additional events to facilitate interaction with interested U.S. companies.
Further, members of the USA Pavilion team have been regular participants at AmCham Shanghai's U.S. Consulate Briefings, held each month with U.S. Consul General Beatrice Camp and her staff. These meetings have provided Ms. Eliasoph and her organizing team the opportunity to interact directly with members of the American business community. AmCham Shanghai is also providing office and meeting space for the USA Pavilion team.
In a continuing effort to increase awareness of this issue, the USA Pavilion team has been featured in AmCham Shanghai's monthly magazine, INSIGHT, which has provided thousands of Americans living in China an introduction to Expo 2010 and details on the USA Pavilion.
Founded in 1915 as the third American Chamber of Commerce established abroad, AmCham Shanghai is now the largest and fastest growing Chamber in the Asia-Pacific region. As such, we strongly believe that U.S. participation in the Shanghai World Expo 2010 is an important demonstration of America's commitment to the U.S.-China relationship. AmCham Shanghai views the USA Pavilion as an historic opportunity to celebrate the longstanding friendship between our peoples.
We look forward to your first visit to Shanghai as the U.S. Secretary of State and would like to take this opportunity to invite you to address the American business community during your stay. Once again, thank you for your support. We look forward to working together to make the U.S. Pavilion a reality.
