Shanghai Expo 2010 USA Pavilion: Official statement of support from Secretary of State Hillary Clinton
April, 2009
Secretary Clinton confirms her strong support for U.S. representation at the 2010 Shanghai World Expo and the USA Pavilion team led by Ellen Eliasoph and Nick Winslow
In a letter dated March 30, 2009, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton expressed strong support for American representation at the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai and for the USA Pavilion team led by Ms. Ellen Eliasoph and Mr. Nick Winslow.
In the letter, Secretary Clinton emphasized the importance of U.S. participation in the Expo, a major global event with an expected audience of 70 million visitors, as an opportunity to showcase American business, culture and values. Equally important is the opportunity to celebrate the longstanding friendship between the American and Chinese people.
Since the beginning of the State Department’s tender process, AmCham Shanghai has been active in promoting interest, participation and sponsorship of the USA Pavilion by connecting members who wish to contribute with organizers. Together with the Bureau of Shanghai World Expo Cooperation and USA Pavilion organizers, AmCham Shanghai has held a series of events for members to learn about Expo opportunities.
In accordance with U.S. legal requirements, the USA Pavilion is being funded and operated through a non-profit organization co-chaired by Ellen Eliasoph and Nick Winslow. Ambassador Frank Lavin, former U.S. Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade, has been appointed chair of the USA Pavilion Steering Committee and will assist the USA Pavilion team as it raises funds and prepares for construction and operation of the pavilion. The U.S. Department of State is prohibited by Federal Law from spending appropriated funds to participate in expositions such as Shanghai 2010 World Expo. Therefore, U.S. private sector participation is essential to raise the necessary funds to design, build and operate the USA Pavilion.
