Event Summary
On March 19, AmCham Shanghai welcomed distinguished economist and international development advisor Jeffrey Sachs for a breakfast event at the J.W. Marriott Hotel. Sachs, who is Director of the Earth Institute at Columbia University in New York and Quetelet Professor of Sustainable Development, shared his views on the U.S.-China relationship and the impact of China’s development on the environment.
Although he believes in gradual appreciation of the renminbi, Sachs is adamantly against labeling China a currency manipulator and the efforts of some in
the U.S. Congress to force an appreciation of China's currency.
On the environment, Sachs praised China's dramatic economic development but noted that decisive action is needed to change the course of carbon emissions. Better incentives and regulation are needed and the United States and China must find better ways to work together to address the issue jointly.
Turn to the April 2010 issue of AmCham Shanghai's Insight magazine for an exclusive interview with Jeffrey Sachs.
