Event Summary
On March 4, AmCham Shanghai's Information and Technology Committee hosted a presentation by Steve Mushero, co-founder and CEO of ChinaNetCloud, on the evolving landscape of cloud computing in China.
What is cloud computing? Mushero opened with a brief video polling participants' knowledge of cloud computing to demonstrate the general public's lack of understanding on the subject. Cloud computing consists of four clouds: software as a service (SaaS), platform as a service (PaaS), infrastructure as a service (IaaS) and grids, explained Mushero.
Discussing each of the main cloud components as they exist today, Mushero predicted that the future of cloud computing lies in China. SaaS providers in China will face a number of challenges raising capital, engineering new products and attracting a large customer base to achieve profitability but will ultimately accelerate, explained Mushero. PaaS will likewise encounter engineering and capital obstacles but may lag. On the other hand, Mushero is optimistic about the growth of IaaS in China and sees a huge future in server and storage clouds especially for the online gaming industry.
Panelists Bill Zuo, CEO of CloudEx, Inc., Enwei Xie, general manager of Developer Platform Evangelism, and Andy Lai from Hewlett-Packard, then joined in Q&A discussion on cloud computing trends, economic drivers and inhibitors, and technology and market opportunities in China.
Event Announcement
Cloud computing has taken the IT world by storm. Cloud computing services – the management and provision of applications, information and data services over the Internet – are being offered by major corporations including Google, Microsoft, Amazon, IBM and Cisco. These IT leaders have invested in cloud computing and are now offering individuals and businesses a range of cloud-based solutions. New start-ups are also developing to offer clients easier, better, faster and more secure options for cloud computing. Experts predict companies will increasingly use cloud-based models as a way to deploy software and store content. IT research and advisory agency Gartner, Inc. listed cloud computing as a key “Strategic Technology Area” in its report on the top IT trends to watch in 2010.
