U.S. Ambassador Cal Ripken Jr., visiting China on his first goodwill mission abroad, will address AmCham Shanghai members to discus "Baseball Diplomacy" and its place in the U.S.-China relationship. Cal Ripken Jr., a 2007 Baseball Hall of Fame inductee, was selected by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to be America's newest Public Diplomacy Envoy on August 13, 2007.
Selected as a baseball all-star 19 years in a row, Ambassador Ripken plans to spend the rest of his trip in China engaging with young people in a cross-cultural dialogue that will include, among other things, introducing them to the game of baseball. He will visit schools and clubs, run baseball clinics and share life experiences.
Secretary of State Rice says, "Public diplomacy must be a dialogue with people from around the world and sought out and conducted not only by people like us in government, but by committed Americans from all walks of life. Cal Ripken embodies the best that sports have to offer and we are thrilled that he will be working for our country on this trip and other trips in the future."
