Project HOPE [Healthcare]

People to People Health Foundation, Project HOPE is a non-profit international Health Education Foundation Based in the US and founded in 1958. Project HOPE focused on bringing Health Opportunities to People Everywhere by providing long-term sustainable solutions to a variety of health problems. HOPE focuses on advancing health training and education; providing better health care for children, women, and communities; providing humanitarian relief; improving health services and facilities; and stimulating dialogue on U.S. and international health policy. Today, HOPEs' educational programs are stronger and more widespread than ever. On-site and visiting physicians, nurses, and other health experts share their skills and knowledge with counterparts in developing and emerging countries on five continents.

  Opportunities for involvement

  - Opportunities for Financial Assistance

Providing training opportunities for Nurses, Doctors and other health care providers from the Shanghai Children's Medical Center (SCMC)
Project HOPE has provided more than 100 fellowships for SCMC doctors and nurses in the past four years. Fellowships are specialized medical training opportunities in the United States and some other countries. After completing training, fellows return to SCMC to apply their new skills to the care of Children here in Shanghai. HOPE's long term relationships with many hospitals, medical schools and health care leaders in the US and around the world allow the HOPE to organize and coordinate high quality training opportunities.

Sponsoring consultants for SCMC
Each year Project HOPE brings consultants to Shanghai Children's Medical Center to work with their counterparts here for 1-3 week periods. These consultants are experts in their hospitals and medical schools, inculding Boston Children's Hospital (cardiovascular surgery), Montefiore Hospital in New York (Child development), St.Judes Hospital (Leukemia and other childhood malignancies), Children's Hospital of Wisconsin (intensive care, emergency medicine), and others.

Special Programs
New projects are proposed by donors and by HOPE each year. Currently these include expanding and improving nurse training in Shanghai and Wuhan;developing a Poison Control center at SCMC to serve all of Shanghai; "Medical" ESL (English as a Second Lauguage) training for physicians and nurses prior to their overseas training. We appreciate new ideas from potential donars to develop health related programs of mutual interest. This year a grant will allow us to develop a Telemedicine capability connecting SCMC with US institutions. We would like to extend telemedicine teaching and care to other, associated hospitals in China. A Medical Management, four module program for hospital administrators and national health ministry officials began in Shanghai in September and will run through December. This program, presented over Eastern Europe for the past 10 years is designed to assist officials adapt health care to a market economy and will, hopefully, be expanded to many hospitals in China. Neonatal transport, physical herapy, and rehabilitation all need further funding.

Sepcial Services
Quality control, evidence based medicine, laboratory control and standardization, infection control are all examples of special services that we would like to promote within SCMC and eventually, through training at SCMC to other, associated hospitals.

Outreach
Project HOPE has always been a train-the-trainers program. As we have helped train the SCMC staff, and the hospital has grown in quality and size, we now need to help bring more physicians, nurses, technicians and others, from smaller cities and towns to SCMC for training.

  - Opportunities for In-Kind Assistance

Medical Equipment
Since SCMC was built four years ago, Project HOPE has helped generous GIK donors provide state-of-the-art equipment, such as MRI, ultrasound and CT scanners. However there are still needs for laboratory, rehabilitation and other equipment. A teaching microscope, tumor cell differentiator, training mannikin for advanced pediatric life support and a destruction unit for needle are all needed.

Medications and supplies
Pharmaceutical companies and others have been generous in providing drugs and supplies, particularly for certain diseases. There is still a need for medications for children with diabetes, congenital heart disease, and such infectious diseases as tuberculosis and HIV infection that require long term treatment which some families cannot afford.

Special Equipment
Some services require special equipment that is not strictly medical. Examples of these are vehicles for transport of emergency cases or newborn infants.

Information and Education hardware
HOPE provides a limited number of computers for training and access to medical information on the intrenet. In conjuction with telemedicine development we would like to provide an even more robust and information intensive environment.

Office equipment
Some specific, high quality office equipment is nearly always needed.

  - Opportunities for Volunteering Time

Inpatient care
Children's hospitals, and the children in them, all benefit from volunteers who can be with children;comforting them and playing with them. Volunteers to assist with play activities at both SCMC and Xin Hua Hospitals are always needed.
Minimum Time Commitment: 4.0 hours/week.

Library assistance
The medical library at SCMC has good, but limited, resources and volunteers experienced in library science or management could help organize and catelog a library with resources in two languages.
Minimum Time Commitment: 8.0 hours/week.

Data collection
Volunteers, particularly those who are bilingual, could be helpful as we try to collect and evaluate morbidity and mortality information for specific diseases and age groups.
Minimum Time Commitment: 8.0 hours/week.

Information technology
Some of our IT issues are not within the capability of our largely medical group. Hospital IT staff are helpful but not always available. As we prepare for telemedicine and additional networking demands we would greatly appreciate experienced volunteers willing to share their professional IT expertise.
Minimum Time Commitment: 4.0 hours/week.

PR, fundraising, conference organization
HOPE sponsors, or is associated with, a number of conferences or educaitonal events each year. Individuals with experience in organization of public events or with experience in fund raising or public relations could be very helpful to us.
Minimum Time Commitment: 4.0 hours/week.
