Shanghai Zoological Park, formerly known as Western Suburb Park, was open to the public on May 25,1954 to celebrate the 5th anniversary of the city’s liberation. It covers an area of 70 hectares. It has been extended to a large and synthetical park with its own distinguishing features. In recent years, a lot of new exhibits were built step by step to be more natural and ecological. 419 species with over 7800 specimens are being exhibited. Over 200 species have bred their offspring and some of them have founded their breeding population such as Giraffe, Zebra, Red Goral, Takin, South China Tiger, Francois’ Leaf Monkey and Oriental White Stork. Also more than 500 species of plants are growing in the park. It is one of the most famous scenic spots with best ecological environment in Shanghai. |
