The American Cancer Society is a nationwide community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer through research, education, advocacy, and service. With more than two million volunteers nationwide, the American Cancer Society is one of the oldest and largest voluntary health agencies in the United States.
The aim of the Society's research program is to determine the causes of cancer and to support efforts to prevent and cure the disease. The American Cancer Society is the largest source of private, nonprofit cancer research funds in the United States, second only to the federal government in total dollars spent. Beginning in 1946 with $1 million, the Society's research program has invested $2.5 billion in cancer research. |

| The ACS University provides a solid foundation for our cancer fighting efforts in China. We plan to host additional ACS University for China over the next two years. Training for 15 leaders plus four collaborative seed grants, US$60,000.

 | Million Woman Mammography Project |
| Breast cancer is becoming a leading cause of death among Chinese women. Planning is underway for the One Million Women's Breast Cancer Screening Project, a large-scale nationwide mammography screenning study projected for 2005-2010 and designed to epidemiologically analyze breast cancer incidence and formulate national breast in partnership with the Ministry of Health and Chinese CDC, the American Cancer Society is aiding in the design of this critical project. ACSU for screening design: US$100,000. Project Evaluation: US$40,000. Materials translation: US$50,000. Nutrition Surveys: US$50,000.

| In China more than 300 million men and 20 million women are smokers. By 2005, two million smoking-related deaths are expected to occur in China each year. Graduate level ACSU for a cessation train-the-trainer program targeting health care professionals: US$60,000. Train Chinse cessation consultants at China CDC's Quit Hotline: $35,000. Tobacco Control ACSU with collaborative seed grants: US$80,000.
