 | First Breath |
| If a baby has neonatal asphyxia (difficulty breathing in the first seconds of life) it may have severe life-long consequences, which include cerebral palsy, seizures, and kidney and liver malfunction. This difficulty breathing cannot be prevented, but it must be treated within seconds. World-wide this problem afflicts approximately 6 per cent of all live births and causes a million infant deaths each year. Neonatal asphyxia is the one disease responsible for the most infant deaths in Sichuan Province.
Heart to Heart has formed an alliance with the American Academy of Pediatrics to teach a program designed to rapidly and effectively treat babies with neonatal asphyxia. This program is called the Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP). After seeing the quality of the NRP course and the emphasis on practical, “hands on” skills, the Sichuan Provincial Public Health Bureau asked Heart to Heart to start 21 training centers throughout the province. Thus far, 7 of these training centers have been started.
We are looking for financial support for: the teaching materials (books, manikins, medical equipment, etc), providing classroom space, transportation for follow up courses in minority area’s, administration cost

 | Fresh Vision |
| The Sichuan Public Health Bureau estimates that there are 587,000 untreated cases of blindness due to cataracts in the province. It is estimated that there are over 14,000 new cases each year. Of existing cases, 40% are totally blind in one or both eyes, while 60% have severely reduced sight in one or both eyes. The surgery takes 20 minutes to remove the natural lens which is clouded by the cataract and replace it with a new lens.
In collaboration with local and international partners, Heart to Heart has sponsored a state-of-the-art mobile eye surgical unit for rural Sichuan. The goal is to accomplish 1000 surgeries per year and train doctors outside of Chengdu in modern cataract surgery techniques. By taking the surgery to the rural patients the cost per surgery is reduced to one quarter of the usual costs in the city hospitals. Also, poor patients are given surgery for free. The highest cost for one eye is USD 100.
We are looking for financial support for high quality replacement lenses so as to reduce the cost that patients must pay out of pocket. The lenses are USD 25 each which would put the cost of surgery within reach of thousands more patients in Sichuan

 | Community service project |
| Coming May there will be a new community service project in the form of renovating school class’s for deaf and mute children a little out of Chengdu. These children are living and working in poor circumstances. Especially because of there deaf condition the facility’s are low comparing which these which we normally expected. Heart to Heart is looking for finances to improve these facility’s and therefore there possibility’s to contribute to there community’s
To improve there teaching possibility’s we are thinking of computers etc, creativity’s and creating possibility’s for learning a profession like small repairing places, and learning how to cook.
